Commerce Home Has a Rich Cultural History

900 North Stiles, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Nothing about its appearance - inside or out - supports an image of what most people would consider a state office building.

The building's original early 1900s facade, revealing the possibility of a place of worship, is tastefully joined with a 1990s version of the same Romanesque Revival architectural style. An original 7,000-square-foot structure now totals approximately 39,750 square feet of space.

First built in Oklahoma's statehood year as the home of the Maywood Presbyterian Church, the building's history includes being the congregrational residence of the Irving Baptist Church. In the decade prior to 1990, the building stood as a crumbling derelict in a blighted urban residential area.

Seeing the opportunities afforded by the urban renewal location, an Oklahoma City architectural firm bought the property, and handed the challenge of a total renovation/building expansion project to its own corporate design director.

Several years later, today's 900 North Stiles building emerged. It is distinctive, unusual, attention-getting and highly functional. It successfully combines the character of the historic with the character of the now - resulting in a high-tech modern working environment.

Located near Oklahoma's state capitol complex, a large and still expanding 200 acre health center, and two of the nation's most traveled interstate highways, the historic building and site are symbolic of the state's heritage of strength and character, as well as its contemporary view of the future.

In the interior, a contemporary three-story skylighted atrium spans both the old and new structures. In sight from this area, contemporary open floor space on the upper levels of the new wing provide glimpses of modular workstations. In the same view, the rough plaster, untreated brickwork and glassless windows of the original building can be seen.

Access to the upper levels of the building is via stairs or a glass elevator which provides a snapshot of history - yesterday and today. From the elevator (located in the original building) for example, you can see into the new extension through the window openings of the former church.

The home of the Commerce Department: a building design and bold appearance which make a positive statement to guests and visitors about Oklahoma's past and future; a location in an area of positive federal, state and private sector development; and a reasonable purchase price which effectively lowers the Commerce Department's operating costs and concludes with property ownership, rather than rising lease costs.
