Commerce Rural Development Specialists (RDSs) are responsible for helping communities and regions prepare for and take advantage of economic development opportunities. RDSs are the "face" of Commerce in rural Oklahoma, providing hands-on assistance as well as referrals to resources. Specific areas of responsibility include:  

Business Retention and Expansion (BR&E)
Studies show that up to 80% of all new jobs are created by existing companies. Commerce’s RDSs are ready to help communities understand and implement effective BR&E tools and strategies and make sure communities are familiar with the variety of resources available to help existing companies stay strong and grow.

Community Development and Economic Development
Communities must be ready to take advantage of economic development opportunities. To that end, Commerce’s RDSs will connect communities to resources that can help them create and implement a solid strategic plan, address infrastructure needs, and continue to grow.

Global Business Services
Taking advantage of international trade opportunities is a great way for Oklahoma businesses to grow. RDSs will help communities and companies learn about the many resources available in this arena.

Business Attraction
When a new, out-of-state business locates in rural Oklahoma, it can provide a real boost to the community and the region. RDSs can help communities learn how to submit an effective and professional response to an RFP for a company looking for an new location.  

Regional Economic Development Partnership Assistance/Development
