Oklahoma's Weather Industry

Oklahoma is widely acknowledged for its cutting-edge weather research, education and development of weather related commercial enterprises. Today, Oklahoma continues to increase its status as the unofficial U.S. weather capital.

WHY CHOOSE OKLAHOMA?
Over the last 40 years, the federal government has poured more than $500 million into weather projects and research in Oklahoma, creating a formidable infrastructure including a statewide environmental monitoring system, the Oklahoma Mesonet, and one of three existing U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement test beds.

  • The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a five-year $11.25 million research grant to University of Oklahoma (OU) to help improve the detection and prediction of severe storms. Research results could lead to lives saved and the prevention of billions of dollars in weather-related damage each year.
  • OU’s School of Meteorology attracts a greater percentage of out-of-state students than any other degree program at the university.
  • OU's School of Meteorology is the largest in the nation.
  • The prestigious National Severe Storms Laboratory, based in Norman, conducts research on all aspects of severe weather, helping to provide better forecasts and warnings of dangerous weather events.
  • More than 700 people are employed in the weather industry in Norman alone, ensuring a steady pipeline of skilled workers.
