The University of Oklahoma School of Meteorology is ranked number one in the nation and today has 360 undergraduates and 80 graduate level students - more than any other meteorology program in the country. Since its founding in 1966 by Professor Yoshi Sasaki, the school has graduated nearly 1,000 students with bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees in meteorological sciences. Because of the highly concentrated cluster of research laboratories and commercial weather businesses located in Norman, known as the Weather Sphere, many of those students stay on after graduation and now call Oklahoma home.
The school forms the backbone of the National Weather Center. In 1988, the School of Meteorology received funding to establish one of the National Science Foundation's Science and Technology Centers: the Center for the Analysis and Prediction of Storms. The center pioneered the application of computer models to predict thunderstorms and is developing a next-generation forecast model for the National Weather Service and the U.S. Military.
