May 24, 2010 – A new report says Oklahoma is a top state for business startups because of its lower cost of living, lack of excessive regulation and a can-do attitude among residents.
The Kauffman Foundation report says Oklahoma was a leader in entrepreneurial activity in 2009. More than 10,000 new Oklahoma businesses started last year.
Rob Fairlie, a Kauffman Foundation Fellow and economic professor, tells The Oklahoman Oklahoma has lower costs for doing business and hasn’t been hit as hard by the economic recession. He says many who have lost their jobs have started new ventures.
Sheri Stickley, Deputy Director for Strategic Planning with the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, says Oklahoma has many programs to assist new businesses
"It shows that Oklahoma entrepreneurs find opportunity in adversity,” says Stickley. "It’s very consistent with our heritage of being willing to take a risk and realize a dream.”
