January 21, 2010 – The Oklahoman reports a portion of Oklahoma City with a high concentration of unemployment and poverty will benefit from a $4 million U.S. Labor Department grant — Pathways Out of Poverty — which supports programs helping the disadvantaged obtain jobs in renewable energy and energy efficiency industries.
The grant is part of a $150 million award in green jobs training grants from the federal recovery act. The goal is to place 200 people in green jobs within two years.
December 30, 2009 - The Journal Record reports the Canadian Valley Career Technology Center of El Reno has joined forces with the state's Workforce Investment Board and the Oklahoma Aerospace Institute to help dislocated workers become Federal Aviation Administration-certified aircraft mechanics
"This is an ideal opportunity to increase the capacity for training workers needed in the aerospace industry in central Oklahoma," Eddie Foreman, the investment board's CEO, tells the Journal Record. "Not only has Tinker continued to hire, but several of the private companies have seen an increase in their business and need additional workers, as well. It also gives us the additional retraining dollars for those customers who have lost their jobs because of closures and layoffs and are considering a career change." November 17, 2009 – The Tulsa World reports fewer job losses, lower foreclosure rates and benefits gained from the energy sector helped both the Tulsa and Oklahoma City metropolitan areas move up on the Milken Institute's Best-Performing Cities 2009 index.
The Tulsa area moved to No. 19 from No. 72 last year. Oklahoma City climbed to No. 26 from No. 50. 13 Counties Involved in Workforce Effort
November 10, 2009 -- Thirteen Oklahoma counties added an important tool in their job creation kits this week when they received "Work Ready" recognition from the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.
Commerce recognized the 13 Southeastern Oklahoma counties - Atoka, Bryan, Choctaw, Coal, Haskell, Hughes, Johnston, Latimer, LeFlore, McCurtain, McIntosh, Pittsburg, and Pushmataha - as the "Oklahoma’s Premier Work Ready Region" during a ceremony at the Kiamichi Technology Center McCurtain County Campus.
