Amazon has announced that it will construct two new fulfillment centers in Oklahoma – one in Oklahoma City and the other in Tulsa. The 640,000-square-foot facilities are expected to employ 1,750 and 1,500 people in Oklahoma City and Tulsa, respectively. Amazon uses fulfillment centers like this as a first stop for fulfilling online orders. Inventory is held in these warehouses before being pulled from shelves and shipped to customers after orders are placed.
In the news release regarding the Oklahoma City fulfillment center, Mark Stewart, Amazon’s Vice President of North America Customer Fulfillment, said, “We’re excited to open our first fulfillment center in Oklahoma and in a city with an outstanding workforce and a commitment to providing great opportunities for employment.”
“A facility bringing more than 1,500 new jobs is a monumental announcement,” said Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt. “This is a great day for Oklahoma City and we’re thrilled to welcome Amazon’s investment in our community. A project of this magnitude required efforts from our city government, our Legislature, our state government, and our local economic development entities. Further, it would not have been possible without the commitment the voters of Oklahoma City made last September to invest in economic development. My gratitude and congratulations to all the parties who stepped up to make this happen. I’m also thrilled to see this facility plant its flag in South OKC. It’s good for the whole city and we look forward to the catalyst we know this project will be for its immediate surroundings in South OKC.”
Less than two weeks after the Oklahoma City fulfillment center, Amazon announced an additional fulfillment center in Tulsa.
“We are excited to bring a second fulfillment center to Oklahoma and work alongside the state’s incredible workforce,” said Stewart. “Support from local leaders has been instrumental in our ability to come to Oklahoma, and we are grateful for their collaboration to bring thousands of new jobs with benefits starting on day one.”
“I am incredibly thankful for Amazon’s decision to build a world-class facility in our city and to employ so many Tulsans. Amazon is changing the world and in Tulsa we look forward to being part of their team,” said Tulsa Mayor G.T. Bynum. “This is the largest new employer announcement in Tulsa history. Our team at the City worked tirelessly with Amazon to ensure Tulsa was selected for this opportunity. We know Amazon could have selected any number of other cities and appreciate Amazon’s recognition of Tulsa as a city where they want to grow.
Both projects were the result of a collaboration among state and local government, tribal nations and economic development entities.
